Community Learning Days

Parents and students in our learning community meet together on Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This gives us an opportunity to build relationships while learning in a group setting.

As part of a history of over 100 years of students around the world learning with the Charlotte Mason philosophy, we embrace her principle that “Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life.”  As such, we strive to cultivate an atmosphere of support and encouragement to learn new things together through the environment of the natural world and we work together as parent-educators to encourage each student to build habits essential to lifelong learning.

We create community through working together as parents to lead classes, working together as students to discover new things and build new habits, and sharing our discoveries, achievements, set-backs, and perseverance with one another.

All courses offered are stand-alone classes. This alleviates pressure on parents to help their students complete weekly “homework” which may be outside of the parent’s pre-set academic program for each student.   Teachers help students fulfull the requirements of the course during the class itself.   Classes are not intended to take the place of academic instruction at home.  Rather, they open a student up to a broader array of information, experiences and relationships than they may obtain in their own homeschool daily schedule.

Each class does fit within the general scope and sequence of recommendations by the Charlotte Mason Education Center (www.thecmec.org) for those utilizing their materials at home.

We enjoy learning together in various ways through our classes with an emphasis on “books and things.”  We utilize engaging stories and literature to help students learn material and reserve the final Friday of each month for an “experiential” learning day on which we go on a field trip to bring our learning to life.

Ages and Stages

Community Learning Days are currently geared toward learners age 5 through 7th grade as well as younger siblings.

Classes Offered

Central Virginia Learning Community strives to support students in their primary learning objectives through various levels of tangible support throughout the week.  Community Learning Days cover courses which may be accomplished in a group setting regardless of individual learning styles at home. This ensures that students can still benefit from their own individualized learning program on the other four days of the week.  Please click here to view full schedule with course descriptions for the 2023 - 2024 academic year.  Courses covered on community learning days include:

"Many of our students experience their best outcomes through one on one instruction in skill based subjects like reading and math.  When they work on content based subjects like history and science, they often enjoy learning with peers.  On community learning days, we focus primarily on the content based subjects which benefit from the input of many voices."

- Joy Barresi, Central Virginia Learning Community Director
